sorry, I didn't really understand your post.

You bought a ring for 40DT but your boyfriend thinks it should only have cost 25-30DT for a Tunisian or 10DT for an English person?

If I've picked you up right then I would say that is wrong because they normally bump the prices up for tourists so it would more be like: Tunisian would pay 10DT for it but they would try to get 25-30DT from a foreigner for it.....either that or he ment £10.00 which would be about 22DT just now

Yes Dragonzest i was confused too .
I think lucyjane meant to write that tourists are often overcharged which is true.
We was in Tabarka and i saw a Club Africa football Ramzi went to buy it when the shopkeeper saw me get out of the car and the price went up!!!! lol

I have to say we need to remember Tunisians need to make a profit and their income is so low compared to us so fair play to them as im sure trade is slow at this present times .

I wasn't happy when I was charged 7 dinar for a fruit cocktail in PEK. I had paid the same amount for 3 fruit cocktails in Mahdia. The waiter ripped me off big time, and would not give me a receipt.

Hi Marilyna 7 dinar= 3 pounds 11 pence for a fruit cocktail is still cheap! if you travel all over the world Tunisian prices (even when that add a bit extra on ) are still okay.

In england drinks etc are expensive.

I forgot to add Sarra lunch and drinks in Mahdia had cost 7 dinar for three of us, in an average restaurant. That is why I was shocked in PEK, as I had paid for a meal and drinks for that amount, a few days before. I know what you are saying. However, I am sure he ripped me off, and did not charge me the normal price. It is the principle. The same man told me it would cost me 25 dinar for a plate of couscous. I have a friend who has a cafe in the medina. I have a starter, main meal, juice, coffee, they bring bread and olives, and biscuits with the coffee, and I never pay more than 10 dinar.

I would not mind paying, if that was the normal price, but does that mean in all the restaurants and cafes, you are charged a different price to locals?

Why did he refuse to give me a receipt?

Yeh, pretty much! Tourists always pay more everywhere so best thing to do is to try to find out a rough Tunisian price for things and get it for around the same price. For instance, one night in Latinos they ran out of Celtia so sold Heinekin. For a Tunisian to buy it from the club it cost 5 dinar but sometimes the tourists would go up to buy one and the bar staff would ask for 7 or 8 dinars and they would pocket the extra profit.....

Marilyna i agree with Dragonzest Tourists are charged more . Its the same for me in Ain Draham we go to a spit and sawdust place and have a 3 course meal for 2 people (no alchol) for 15 dinar lol.
Sometime we get a Tunisian takeaway whole chicken chips salad bread etc for 1o dinar and very very nice it is !

Guess I have been lucky before, ie I pay the price on the menu, and am given a receipt. It has never happened to me before, just this one place in PEK, and I won't go back there again. Funny, as I have never been charged tourist prices in other places.

I had the same experience in PEK with no receipt. Knew we were being ripped off but the overall price was still much cheaper than home so just paid up and even left a tip! More than one place did it

i know what you mean i think they sting you bad on the vodka how is vodka so dear in tunisia?? in safari bar the beer was very good value, we realised that if you payed as you drank there was no problem but alot of the waiters wouldnt let us go to the bar to pay a we drank and added it to a bill and they then added things we hadnt order hoping we would get drunk enough to not notice .. xx

Most of the time it is cheaper than the UK, the only place I paid UK prices was at the Movenpick. A friend of mine had a similar experience in PEK, she is not a tourist, but a resident, and was furious.

Vodka etc is expensive because its a Muslim country so Alchol like Vodka is imported from other countries on average a litre bottle costs 90 dinar about 45 english pounds .

it like 50 dinar for half lettre vodka in clubs and 10 dinar a drink and you have to pay for coke seperate !! xx

You have to remember that Tunisian income is much lower than from people from Europe.
So in a lot off places it's even common to have Tunisian prices and Tourist prices, for excample when go for a coffee here nearby a little hotel at the beach, we pay less than tourists who are staying there. Otherwise they will not have clients outside the tourist season, so they have to do it.

But offcourse it's also common to have at other places tourist prices and also for jewelry.

And I think Lucy Jane that if you bought it for 40 dinars and you did find it a good price otherwise you wouldn't have bought it, it's not nice if you're boyfriend is going there after how long....? to get some money back.
But the next time you better buy things together with your boyfriend, the price will be better.
And it can be even more better if you're not there! ;-)

I agree with Netniet on this when it comes to paying for goods such as jewelry etc, as you are usually haggling for it anyways, never pay more than what you personally think it is worth. If it is cheaper than the UK then at the end of the day you have still got yourself a bargin. The sellers will never sell you something for less than what they paid for it and if they are wanting more then you are willing to pay and will not lower the price then just walk away, you aren't losing anything! Half the time they will chase after you anyways ;)

I've been lucky when it comes to food and drinks as I've never had to pay more than the menu price and I've always managed to get beer at Tunisian prices in the club....I'm starting to think I just know too many people hahah

hehe I felt the same when I was there the first time. I think it is because it is so different from what we are used to but the more you go the more you will get used to it....well I say that but my mate is still pretty useless. He panics whenever we are near the shops cause he can't say no to people. He ended up buying a bag he didn't even want last year and this year he was in total panic mode when in the medina and kept telling me to stop looking in stalls hahahah....I think the wee blind guy who jumped out his shop and started hugging him put the fear of God into him ;)
