What makes a Love-Rat ? [The Truth]

You visit Tunisia, you see many people dressing well and modern on streets, you see a lot of bars, clubs... everything is available, just like anywhere else in the world, you might also have heard that Tunisia is a secular country (which is true, we don't obtain our laws from religion). You also notice that most people don't practice religion, they drink, party, practice premarital sex.. They seem normal people to you so you wouldn't mind having a Tunisian-boyfriend.
There's something in this world that is much stronger than religion, which is traditions. So what are the Tunisian traditions ?
Tunisian traditions are so influenced with religious culture, people get brainwashed by them since very young age, from family, school and society, so it is very unlikely for a Tunisian to get over these traditions later in life.

I'm sorry this is gonna be a bit long but I have to explain this point then we will jump to the core of the subject :

*What is more important in Islam, Praying or Fasting ? Of course praying! how many people will go to mosque or stop doing what they do and go to pray when they hear the Adhan (Islamic call to worship), only few ones right ? people work here even on Friday during the pray (which is very important in Islam). Now what if you go outside in Ramadhan during the fasting time and try to drink a bottle of water in public ? You will make everyone feel rage, and the police will arrest you, and put you on some detention center for some time or some days, but they will release you eventually because they can't find an accusation to send you to an actual jail as this is not a crime in Tunisian law, why they arrest non-fasting people then ? Tunisian-Traditions!

*Sex outside marriage in Tunisia is not illegal as long as both parties are adult and doing it with their own will (otherwise its pedophilia or rape). You'd still get arrested though if the police find out, and of course just temporary and they will release you! Again Tunisian-Traditions!

*Alcohols is available everywhere in Tunisia, can you get arrested temporarily because you drank alcohol in Tunisia ? Of course! But they don't do it anymore like they used to do it before. So again! Tunisian-Traditions!

You might be wondering if the Tunisian law is secular, what gives the police the permission to arrest you for all this ? This is the power of traditions, that will make everyone sympathize with you even if you doing something illegal.

Okay now, your Tunisian boyfriend is one of those brainwashed hypocrite Tunisians right ? (of course there's always some exceptions) but not the guy you meet in the animation team or the hotel bartender lol. Every girl who had any relationship before marriage (even if it is a true love relationship) is a slut for a Tunisian man. You know, this applies to both European and Tunisian girls, he would appear so caring, lovely and all but he will never think of having a long term relationship with you, I'm sorry it is the truth. Virginity is very sensitive topic in Tunisia, if this wasn't a problem in Tunisia, I'm sure there will be much less stories here, your Tunisian boy thinks you are a slut, even if he does everything to hide, he will have it always in the back of his mind and he will leave you searching for his dream virgin girl one day... Tunisian-Traditions!

You have very low chance that a Tunisian guy (or a man with arab/muslim culture) will truly love you and appreciate you as you are (even if you are beautiful, young, rich) he will always think of getting rid of you in future and get a virgin muslim girl.

Okay so now you know the real reason why your young Tunisian prince would scam you emotionally, it is not only/always the age difference. Now let's talk why would he scam you financially ?
The lowest legal Tunisian monthly salary is 380TND (110 GBP). Most hotel workers get paid 400/450 TND (115 GBP). The cheapest apartment in Tunis is 400TND per month.. This means if you want to live by yourself and get your own private space you will spend all your salary in renting and have no money to even eat, although even if you live with your family 400TND is still not enough to eat for one month. The average Tunisian salary is 650TND (185 GBP) So this means most Tunisians have a very low wage, so how they can still live and cover all expenses ? With scam ofcourse, all people scam eachother here, the country is so poor and pretty corrupted, so how you don't expect that he gonna scam you financially too ?
I assume that many of you are from UK, The GDP of Tunisia is just 40B USD, this is not even 1/15 of London's GDP... Things are very different, the poorness of Tunisia is just below the zero, they just hide this. We produce nothing, all our wealth/natural resources is stolen by France and UK and our corrupted Tunisian politicians. You always hear a lot of scam stories in countries like Tunisia, this is normal.

I know that most of you have been living in Tunisia long enough to know this, just thought I'd write and explain everything better!

Feedback is welcome!

Thank you @ fienda for very clearly writing what we often try to explain to members joining here.

I’m glad you make the point that some Tunisians scam each other, that’s its acceptable and so scamming tourists is just another way to boost income.

I guess the difference is that in my country even if people are poor or on a low salary they do not generally take from someone else. Of course we have criminals who do comit fraud, take benefits they are not entitled but it is never acceptable or the norm.

You also make the point that on the surface it can seem that the Tunisian boyfriend is similar. They drink, like to socialise and party, go to discos’-and clubs, so it can appear they share the same interests but the traditions run deep and underpin everything in Tunisian society.

It’s a very helpful post for people, mostly women, who truly want to believe their man is different, genuine and unlike other Tunisians.

I’d be interested in how Tunisians perceive whole families who appear to welcome the European into the family and pretend to accept and support the relationship? Are these families talked about in a negative way? Do other Tunisians condone the pretence or do they feel it brings negative publicity or shame? Surely these families are not respected?

Honesty is always appreciated. This will help many victims to have a better perspective about what is going on. Including normalizing scam due to poor wages.
Sincerely thankful for the truth.

This bit, Fienda....this is the bit I want to understand. I will be as honest here as you have been in your OP.

The Tunisian girls were the cheapest girls I have ever come across....and I am very well travelled....I have honestly never seen such loose behaviour by any women in the world as I saw in Tunisia, so I want to know:

. Why are we construed as cheap whores, when our behaviour is nothing like that of Tunisian women?

. Why is the hymen so important, when even the women that still have a real one are still sexually active before marriage, in the form of anal, oral and partial penetration? These are not innocent girls, they are performing sexual acts, so why the hymen?

. Why does Tunisian man take the virginity of Tunisian woman, knowing that oftentimes, the woman is then left with a lifetime of spinsterhood or prostitution because nobody wants her?

. Why is a plastic hymen and marriage based on a lie more acceptable than an honest woman that admits she is not a virgin?

Tunisia claims to be progressive, it claims women have equality, rights etc.....so why must they, in 2019, still have to pretend to be virgins, despite Tunisian man sleeping with man, woman and sheep?

Please don't compare UK with Tunisia, the lowest wage in UK is enough to live and eat at least, here the lowest wage is not even enough to rent an apartment in a very shitty place. The more poor people you have the more scam/crimes you gonna get, this is known worldwide.

Tunisians are known to be very racist when it comes to marriage, they never accept anyone diff, and most marriages are traditional where the mother just seek a bride for her son from the family or from people from the same region they came from (Now imagine if you are from another continent). Many would support their son marrying a European for Visa yes. Please keep in mind when I say this I mean the majority is like that, and not every single family is like that!

And this.....this is another one that really gets my goat!!

Why is Tunisian rat so thick and stupid (I do not mean you :D ), that they do not realise it’s all relative?

Yes, we earn more....but that’s because our living costs are so much higher.
For example, I haven’t been to Tunisia for a while, so correct me if I’m now wrong, but in 2016, twenty cigarettes cost roughly 3-5 dinar for twenty....that is slightly less, or just over £1 for us.

In the UK, twenty cigarettes cost roughly £8-10.....that’s 27.8-34.8 dinar.

That’s just one example. Also, wages in the UK for the working classes, compared to what we have to pay out to live are low. Young people in the UK cannot afford to live alone anymore than Tunisian people, our gas and electricity bills are sky high, as is petrol, clothes and food.....for us, Tunisia seems so cheap....but that’s because we view it through Western eyes, why can these stupid rats not view our life this way?

Western people will work two/three jobs at a time to earn honest money, we work nine/twelve hour shifts all week....we are too exhausted from working to properly enjoy our time off, family and leisure time are minimal, shops are 24hr openings, businesses working seven days a week.....time off is minimal. Can you imagine a rat doing that?

They think we are all millionaires because they are too stupid to do the math properly....they don’t realise the hours we have to work, the meals we have to sacrifice to pay for luxuries like flights!

I never, ever got over my rat telling me we could save £30,000 in two years in England, anymore than I ever got over his words of “Don’t worry, Stoopid, if we don’t work, your government will give us money for free”........say whaaaaat?????
Christ, if it were that simple....we really would all be millionaires!

Where are their damn brain cells? What the hell is going on with the Tunisian education system that has left these rats so completely dim and delusional?

My kids can no way afford to get on the housing ladder, they will be living at home for donkeys years, because to earn a living wage from one job is now nigh on impossible, and house prices, to rent or buy, are extortionate.

I don’t care how little somebody earns, dignity, pride and morals should be enough to prevent anybody scamming an innocent, hardworking person....just rats lack those qualities.

the lowest wage in UK is enough to live and eat at least, here the lowest wage is not even enough to rent an apartment in a very shitty place.
It’s the same in the UK, Fienda! We have people living on the streets, feeding their families from food banks, having to decide if they want to eat or put the heating on that day. People are starving, committing suicide because they feel so helpless. People are in debt up to their eyeballs, because they’re having to live off credit cards....which have to be paid back with crazy interest rates. Families are being evicted from their homes because they can’t afford the rent/mortgage repayments.
We have period poverty banks here for young girls, because their families cannot afford sanitary items.
Families are are buying second/third hand clothes from jumble sales.

The lowest wage in the UK is NOT enough to live and eat on....the working classes are struggling, our youth cannot get started out in life because they can’t get the money.

Where do you get these ideas from?

Lowest wage in UK is 1,453.28 EUR per month that is 1339 GBP. It is low to live in UK but you can survive with it. Tunisia is 380TND (110GBP), it is impossible to find a house to rent with 380TND, it is impossible to eat 3 meals daily for a month with 380TND, it's really really low. I'm not justifying what Rats do but I'm telling you that even the government scams us, and people who have no skills have literally noway to survive. 20 cigarettes of marlboro is 8 TND btw (2.3 GBP). One beer in an average bar is 5 TND (1.5 GBP). 1KG of beef meat is 30 TND (8.6 GBP) oh and prices are going up every few months, wages never change lol

A friend of mine, two villages down, is renting out a three bed property.....this is in a horrible, dirty little village where nobody in their right mind would choose to live. The rent is £800 per month!!!! That’s 2785.216 Tunisian dinar!

You think one person can afford that? Not a hope in hell! Even a working family would struggle to pay that once the bills and groceries were accounted for!
And THAT is in a horrible village....I’m frightened to even look at prices for London/Cambridge etc.....Christ, I felt my knees buckle when I read that!

Yes, I have watched Tunisian expenses rise, but not the wages....but it’s crucial to realise that it’s happening everywhere. Our government also steal our money....you will never see a poor politician in any country.

When you are working out how much we earn, which actually does not reflect reality even slightly, you are not allowing for our monthly costs, or income tax or National insurance. My electricity is £110 per month, gas £70 per month, Council tax £145 per month, phones, TV, internet £95 per month, house insurance £30 per month, TV license £12 per month, water £40 per month, my mortgage is paid off (due to luck), but an average monthly mortgage repayment is about £750+, our groceries roughly £700 per month, school bus fares per month £180...plus the kids need clothes, school uniforms, shoes, toiletries etc.
Our lives are not what you think.

I'm not here to discuss world economic crisis, I think I made it clear. I mean if you date a guy who works in a hotel who doesn't even know how to speak and at the same time he seems to have some luxuries, you know for 100% he is a Rat. I mean let's be honest 99% of hotel staff are rats lol, you guys know this!

No, but you ARE trying to justify rat behaviour with the excuse that they are poor....well none of us are rich either, but we are not scamming innocent people.

You keep going on about Tunisian wages and living expenses, and comparing them to UK wages, but not living expenses.....it’s important that this stuff is explained, because too many Tunisian people have created a Utopia that does not exist...our lives are a million miles removed from what they imagine, and if they know this, just maybe a few will decide to live an honest life, and stop stealing from good people.

Yes, we know about rats in hotels and tourist areas, but some rats, my own included, did not work in tourism, nor live in a tourist area.

Our Western priorities are different, we do not judge a person on wealth or education, but on how they treat us, on how they make us feel.....and at the beginning, they treat us well.

My rat did not have luxury items, he lived between Ezzahra and Khelidia, the village from hell. Rats are spread the entire length and breadth of the country and work in every industry....or are unemployed coffee shop dossers.

I'm not justifying anyone's behavior, I'm just trying to explain how things are here, I say it is normal to have more scammers in countries like Tunisia because it is so poor so that people keep this in their mind and be careful, it doesn't mean I think scam is a normal thing.. and I'm comparing to UK because you guys are from the UK. If Tunisia is poor and getting poorer, then it is only Tunisians fault, the rats are just the little scammers.

Our cost of living here is scandalous, like mango has already stated poverty is rife here the government don't care as long as their pockets are lined . Doesn't matter how much our currency converts to td our cost of living is so much higher .
1 packet if cigarettes knocking on £10
It's about 37 td , the same as a Tunisian family us here are scraping the bottom of the barrel . No reason to scam , like my dad always tells me ' gftl live within your means ' .
If mammy and daddy rat have 2 kids at home then at least there is several salaries going into the house .
Everyone tends to live together anyway after marriage the overheads are then much lower and shared out .
It's not about poverty it's about greed , putting on a show for the neighbours to make themselves look superior with the 'look at me , look what I have mentality ' .
The women are more than half to blame , you know why ? If they accepted the man how he is , without the want and need for possessions, then the men probably wouldn't scam .

reading this thread a few times yet another delusional Tunisian.
Started off quite good and then down hill from there. Because they are poor morals go out the window and it's ok to become a thief because uk people earn more money.
Traditions or Islam don't tell you to be a prostitute to scam innocent people.
I never was a tourist in Tunisia never met my rat there I was the virgin bride, western yes.
It doesn't matter the age how you met they just lying scamming ugly men and some women.
It's about wealth in Tunisia showing off to your neighbours. There is poverty in every country and always will be. They would be better off begging on the streets than scamming women.
Your not poor when you have a roof over your head food to eat.
It's not about Adidas clothes the nike shoes.
Btw I never seen a Tunisian man without a phone in hand. Going to coffee shops smoking and drinking.
Us western people earn our money don't get our hymen fixed because we are not trying to defraud anyone. The hate and jealousy among you is ridiculous. I am glad I was brought up with morals.
That was my downfall brought up honestly didn't think there was low lying filth like north Africans.
Stop making poverty a excuse for these rats.

I can't agree more - I have worked a lot with the homeless in the UK and yes there are a few that would steal but the majority still have morals and share their food etc.

I know I have said it before but there are some genuine Tunisians but in the tourist areas they are few and far between. Most visitors to Tunisia only visit tourists areas and don't see the good people.

Haven't had time to read the entire thread as visiting family just now but we have homeless - we have people freezing to death because our weather is harsh and they can't afford heating - we have veterans and pensioners dying due to lack of funding.

Do you know one reason this happens - it's because they don't scam and pretend to love someone until they rinse them completely.

Don't bleat on about the poverty in Tunisia because I can assure you it's not a bed of roses here either!

By the way, not everyone on here are from the UK, we are a mixed bunch and I can tell you that there is a lot of poverty where I am and some don't even know how they will survive the next day. I have seen other parts of the world that don't even have drinking water, or where they have to travel miles to wash their clothes, or don't have a roof over their head but yet they still singing and laughing, and dancing, it amazes me.
Bottom line is poverty doesn't justify scamming innocent people for any reason no matter what. Period. If they have family they figure it out instead of allowing their sons to go sit in a coffee shop all day everyday scamming with their name brand clothes and cellphones. I'm over it!

You are right! The poverty in Tunisia was below anything which this American could ever have figured...so was the f***ing greed and corruption! You cheat and lie...rot in hell! I lost $26,000USD to a f***ing Tunisian bastard in ElHamma, Gabes! They are retarded, thieving, no-conscience psychopaths! Be warned ladies!

I’m glad you opened this topic for debate @fienda.

China and India has the biggest population in the world. More than half their citizens are drowning in poverty. Yet, they are also the countries with the least crime in scamming. They rather work 2 and 3 jobs before resorting to crime in scamming.

Being poor is not a ticket to scam or commit crime. Tunisians are NOT committing scams because they are poor, they are committing crimes because they are trying to one up the neighbors. They want the recognition and is in competition with one another. They don’t care about any of that statistical data you just enlightened us about, all they care about it their virgin bride and making sure they shine better than the next Tunisian. That is their motive. Tunisian mentality 101, spend all my money on a Tunisian bride, and buy all kinds of material things I can’t afford, but cry poverty. How’s that logic?? I can turn $1.00 USD into $10.00 USD if I really want to. It’s call saving. And sacrifice. Not much money, but it adds up overtime. Budgeting means cutting back on my wants and focusing on my needs. Nope, Tunisians gotta put on a show for the neighbors. Light, camera, action.....

The government is corrupt because it is a repeated cycle of generational greed. Who you think the politicians get their skills from, their Tunisian environment. The same greedy people who raised them and now they are all politicians. It’s just a repeated cycle of competition and greed. No one cares about the poverty in Tunisia, they care about looking good. Same goes for other politicians in other countries. But even under those circumstances, I still have control over my own life. The government doesn’t have that much of a hold on me to where I can’t make small changes to my own environment to make it better.

Tunisians get the newest cell phones, but don’t have a pillow to lay their head, but hey, at least they have the latest Huawei. Tunisian women got MAC makeup and Daniel Klein purses/watches, but can’t afford running water. Tunisians spend money on cigarettes daily, but can’t put that money in a savings account (regardless of how small the amount is, it does add up). Tunisian buy coffee each day at these coffee shops, but can’t sit at that same table to make a budget and cut cost. My rat told me how much he spent eating out each day. He never cooked. When I added the amount, I concluded that he had spent so money on food in a week, it was pathetic. I added the amount for one month to show him how much he was spending within a month worth of take out food. It added up to be to a small vacation in Malaysia for a weekend. That’s how much money he spent on eating out. He could take a vacation on that money. When I brought this to his attention, I got the same story about poverty. And he went right back out and ordered take out food, instead of shopping for groceries and cooking foods that would save him much more.

Neither poverty nor political power are legal excuses for scamming and crime. Scamming is a choice, nothing more. Morality is the biggest perpetrator of Tunisian scams (see study done by Cambridge University on the morality subject).

They will not starve....the neighborhood share their sheep with the poor folk in their area, plus....money not spent on food whilst fasting is donated to the poor....an average for every member of the household....so your victimless, poor, ex family will have to get the begging bucket out....happy days :D

So what are the Tunisian traditions ?
Allow me an honest answer here:

Most of what you refer to as "Tunisian traditions" are not traditions. Most are, in fact, the result of nepotism, a corrupt politic cast, a toxic society, ignorance and delution.
A hypocrite is one who speaks this way and acts another way - however, a good number of tunisians are not hypocrites in this sense. They speak in this way AND act in the very same way. And they only diverge from it when they fear they could be shamed by their neighbours - some even don't care about that.

And the police? Quite a few are trained for a couple of weeks and put on the street for minimum pay. No wonder, when they have not the slightest idea about the law and no wonder they try to get lucky with drivers that are stopped for no reason. They (when it is men) molest young girls and women because they think they can, as do taxi drivers and some "managament" people who believe they are important - again, because they can and because the people let them continue to do it and, often times, look the other way.
When a woman is looking for a job, she is not really surprised when she is invented into a horizontal position first - or asked for money or other favors.

Hypocrites? You wish, they were.

And, yes, the goverment. They are all evil, right? Think about it - do the average tunisian, in his job or in his shop, behave really different when they give their family or clan an advantage?

I could go on and on and on, but I will stop here.

No - the whole tunisian society is toxic and it will take not years, but generations to change that. No need to mention that there are exceptions from that, but interestingly, I didn't find the exceptions in the so-called "modern" or "educated" families, but in the simple people who live in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, I know very well that the wages in Tunisia are not too high and that rent and food are expensive. However, in western countries, there have been times as well when the situation was exactly the same, in some even worse, eg. after a war. But ... the people there did not roam the cafes and sat on their behinds, or waited, in front of the TV, that a good paying job knocked on the door, or scammed foreigners, but took even bad jobs, improved their skills by training and education and worked their way up.

Do not blame the behaviour just on an alleged tradition, do not blame the behaviour on being poor - I have heard all this a countless times over the years and it all sounds well. It is well suited to make especially western people believe to undertand, want to help and want to tolerate, but it is, unfortunately, not the whole truth.
